AI and the News: An Open Challenge 2018

Applications are open for “AI and the News: An Open Challenge” organized and funded by the Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative. This challenge is open for journalists, designers, technologists, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, lawyers from a variety of communities around the world.

This open challenge, which will award up to $750,000 to a range of projects, is seeking fresh and experimental approaches to addressing four specific problems at the intersection of AI and the news.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • Anyone, anywhere, of any age.
  • The challenge is open to journalists, designers, technologists, engineers, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, lawyers.
  • Anyone who thinks they have a good idea about addressing these problems that may not have been tried before, anywhere in the world.

Benefits:

  • Winners will receive a share of $750,000 for early-stage projects that address one of the four problem areas outlined in our challenge brief.
  • They anticipate that winning ideas will be awarded anywhere from $75,000 to $200,000 to test, refine and build out a project.

Application Deadline:

The AI and News Open Challenge open from Sept. 12, 2018, at 9 a.m. ET until Oct. 12, 2018, at 11:59 p.m.
